This is a turning point. I would like to see the conversation about immigration focus on the language of the issue. For a long time, the person who wanted to make sure we didn’t get more than seven million more immigrants — that’s the person who was called the enemy. The person who thought we should make it more difficult for immigrants to work in the country became the enemy. The person who wanted to make sure that immigrants would fill low-wage jobs became the enemy. The person who thought that “illegals” did not deserve to live here became the enemy.
This is a turning point. It’s time to drop the language of the enemy.
I’d like to see the discussion be about getting immigrants out of the shadows of the economy and working with them in the mainstream of the economy.
